MODIFIERS
 

. Modifiers "dangle" when they have no reasonable or logical words to modify.
INCORRECT - Working overtime into the night, the quarterly tax summaries were completed before the deadline.
CORRECT - Working overtime into the night, we completed the quarterly tax summaries before the deadline.

2. Words such as pronouns I, WE, HERS, and THEIRS help prevent dangling modifiers.
INCORRECT - Completely painted last year, I was most impressed by the beauty of the historical home.

CORRECT - Completely painted last year, the historical home impressed me very much.

3. Misplaced modifiers may be in sentence positions other than the beginning. Avoid placing modifiers too distant from the word,
phrase, or clause they modify.
INCORRECT - It is true that all students are not talented artists.

- The course only consists of nine meetings.
CORRECT - It is true that not all students are talented artists.

- The course consists of only nine meetings.
