COMPLEX

1. A complex sentence contains only one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.
Definitions:

- A clause, but NOT A PHRASE, contains a subject and a predicate.
- An independent clause contains a subject and a predicate and can
stand alone as a complete sentence. It is not introduced by a
subordinating word.
- A dependent clause, although it contains a subject and a predi-
cate, cannot stand alone as a complete sentence but relies upon
the independent clause to complete its meaning. A dependent
clause is ordinarily introduced by such words as WHEN, SINCE,
AS, WHO, AFTER, ALTHOUGH, THAT, and WHICH.
