When to use past continuous අතීත කෙරෙමින් භාවිතය

යම් ක්‍රියාවක් තවත් ක්‍රියාවකට පෙර ආරම්භ වී පසු ක්‍රියාවට පසුව අවසාන වන අවස්ථා වලදී ING භාවිතා වේ.

The past continuous is usually used when one action began before another, and finished after it.

I was reading when he arrived.

ඔහු එනවිට මම පොතක් කියවමින් සිටියෙමි. මම පොත බැලීමට පටන්ගත්තේ 8 ටය‍; ඔහු ආවේ 9 ටය; මම පොත කියවීම අවසාන කළේ 10 ටය.

In other words I started reading at 8 o'clock, then he arrived at 9 o'clock, then I finished reading at 10 o'clock.

යම් ක්‍රියාවක් අතීතයේ පටන් ගෙන තවම අවසානවී නොමැති විටද ING භාවිතා කළ හැකිය.

We can also use the tense when we talk about an action that had already started and was still continuing at a particular time:

At five o'clock, it was raining.

In other words it started raining at 4 o'clock, and finished raining later at 7 o'clock. Here is a diagram:

යම් ක්‍රියා දෙකක් අතීතයේ ආරමිභ වී යම් වේලාවක කෙරෙමින් පැවතුන විට
Finally, we can use this tense to describe TWO actions that were BOTH continuing at the same time in the past. In this case, we use the past continuous for both actions:

While I was sleeping, she was working.

In other words I started sleeping and she started working  at 10 o'clock, and we both finished our actions later at 12 o'clock.
