The structure of the passive voice is very simple:
කර්මකාරක ව්යුහය සරළය
subject + auxiliary verb (be) + main verb (past participle)
කර්මය+ උප ක්රියා පදය+ ප්රධාන ක්රියාව (කෘදන්තය)
The main verb is always in its past participle form.
ප්රධාන ක්රියාව සැම විටම කෘදන්තයකි.
Look at these examples:
subject කර්මය | auxiliary verb (to be) උප ක්රියාව | main verb (past participle) ප්රධාන ක්රියාව (කෘදන්ත). | |
Water | is | drunk | by everyone. |
100 people | are | employed | by this company. |
I | am | paid | in euro. |
We | are | not paid | in dollars. |
Are | they | paid | in yen? |
Use of the Passive Voice
We use the passive when:කර්මකාරක වාක්ය භාවිතා කරනුයේ
- we want to make the active object more important කර්මයට වැඩි අවධානයක් යොමු කිරීමට
- we do not know the active subject කතෘ නොදන්නා විට
subject
verb
object
give importance to active object (President Kennedy)
President Kennedy
was killed
by Lee Harvey Oswald.
active subject unknown
My wallet
has been stolen.
?
Note that we always use by to introduce the passive object (Fish are eaten by cats). Look at this sentence:
- He was killed with a gun. ඔහු මරා දමා ඇත්තේ තුවක්කිවකිනි.
අප by පදය භාවිතා කරන්නේ ක්රියාව කළ තැනැත්තා හඳුන්වන්නටය. මෙහිදී ක්රියාව කළ තැනැත්තා නැත. තුවක්කුවකින් එය කළ බව පමණක් පෑවසේ. (with)
Normally we use by to introduce the passive object. But the gun is not the active subject. The gun did not kill him. He was killed by somebody with a gun. In the active voice, it would be: Somebody killed him with a gun. The gun is the instrument. Somebody is the "agent" or "doer".
He was killed with a gun by someone. - He was killed with a gun. ඔහු මරා දමා ඇත්තේ තුවක්කිවකිනි.
