Proper Nouns without THE නිත්‍ය නාම වල the නොයෙදීම
 

මිනිසුන්ගේ නම් වලට ඉදිරියෙන් “the” නොයොදයි.
We do not use “the” with names of people.

Her first name is Saradha (not *the Saradha)
Her full name is Saradha Gunathilaka.

ලියාපදිංචි කරන විට "The" නොයෙදී නම් ව්‍යාපාර නාම වල මුලට the නොයෙදේ.

If the full (registered) name of a company starts with "The", then we use "The" if we use the full name,

The Finance Ltd (ලියාපදිංචි කළ)

 


We do not normally use “the” with names of companies.
පහත සමාගම් සමග “the” භාවිතා නොවේ.

Sampath Bank, Nokia, Hero-Honda
Sathosa Motors, Sri Lankan, DFC Airways

නගර හා රටවල් සමග යෙදීමේදී
We do not normally use “the” with

Kandy(not *the Kandy), Colombo
countries England, Italy, Brazil
continents Asia, Europe, North America
islands Sri Lanka, Maldives
mountains Sri Pada, Piduruthalagala, Namunukula, Hunnasgiriya

Exception!

If a country name includes “States”, “Kingdom”, “Republic” etc, we use “the”:

states : the United States, the US, the United States of America, the USA
kingdom : the United Kingdom, the UK
republic : the French Republic

We do not use “the” with “President/Doctor/Mr etc + Name”:

the president : President Mahinda (not *the President Mahinda)
the King : King Vijayabahu (not *the King Vijayabahu)

the captain : Captain Kingsly
the doctor: Doctor Nimal, Dr Seaman, Professor Samaranayaka

my uncle, your aunt Uncle Ruwan, Aunt Mala
Mr Perera (not *the Mr Perera), Mrs Perera, Miss Gunarathna

Look at these example sentences:

Who was the president before President Mahinda Rajapaksa?

We do not use “the” with “Lake/Mount + Name”:
the lake Lake Bogambara
the mount Mount Everest

Look at this example sentence:

We live beside Lake Bogambara. We have a fantastic view across the lake.

We do not normally use “the” for roads, streets, squares, parks etc:

streets etc Union Street, Teldeniya Road, Fifth Avenue

Many big, important buildings have names made of two words
(for example, Kennedy Airport).
If the first word is the name of a person or place, we do not normally use “the”:

Kennedy Airport, Alexander Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral

places : Heathrow Airport, Waterloo Station, Edinburgh Castle
