Uncountable nouns are substances, concepts etc. that we cannot divide into elements. We cannot "count" them.
We cannot count "water".
මින් පෙරද උගත් පරිදි ගණන් කල නොහැකි නාම පද එහි සංඝටක වලට බෙදිය නොහැක.
උදා: ජලය ගණන් කල නොහැක.
- dance, music, art, love, happiness
- advice, information, news
- furniture, luggage
- rice, sugar, dhall, butter, water
- power, electricity, gas, power
- money, currency , light
අප සාමාන්යයෙන් ඒවා ඒක වචන ලෙස හඳුන්වන අතර ක්රියාවද ඒක වචන වේ.
We usually treat uncountable nouns as singular. We use a singular verb.
For example:
This news is very important.
Your luggage looks heavy.
ගණන් කළ නොහැකි නාම සමග a/an නොයෙදේ.
We do not usually use the indefinite article a/an with uncountable nouns.
We cannot say "an information"
or "a music".
නමුත් පහත පරිදි යෙදේ
a piece of news
a bottle of water
a grain of rice
We can use some and any with uncountable nouns:
I've got some money.
Have you got any rice?
We can use a little and much with uncountable nouns:
I've got a little money.
I haven't got much rice.
This news is very important.
