An adverb is a word that tells us more about a verb.
Most Adverbs describe the manner, place, or time of an action. බොහෝ ක්රියා විශේෂණ ක්රියාවක් සිදුවූ ආකාරය, ස්ථානය හා වේලාව දක්වයි.
Many adverbs end with the suffix -LY. Most of these are created by adding -LY to the end of an adjective, like this:
1. Function of Adverbs
The principal job of an adverb is to modify or give more information about verbs
- Janath speaks loudly. (How does Janath speak?)
- Malan lives locally. (Where does Malan live?)
- He never smokes. (When does He smoke?)
Modify an adjective: විශේෂණයක අදහස වෙනස් කිරීම
- He is really handsome.
Modify another adverb: ක්රියා විශේෂණයක අදහස වෙනස් කිරීම
- She drives incredibly slowly.
But adverbs have other functions, too. They can:
- Modify a whole sentence: සම්පුර්ණ වාක්යයක් වෙනස් කිරීම
- Obviously, I can't know everything.
- Modify a prepositional phrase:වාක්යංශයක අදහස වෙනස් කිරීම
- It's immediately inside the door.
2. Forms of Adverbs
Many adverbs end in -ly. We form such adverbs by adding -ly to the adjective.
- quick+ly > quickly
- soft+ly > softly
- strong+ly >strongly
- honest+ly> honestly
- interesting+ly > interestingly
But not all words that end in -ly are adverbs. "Friendly", for example, is an adjective.
Some adverbs have no particular form, for example:
සමහර ක්රියා විශේෂණ විශේෂ ආකාරයක් නොගනී
- well, fast, very, never, always, often, still
3. Adverb Position ක්රියා විශේෂණ වාක්යක යෙදෙන ස්ථාන
Adverbs have three main positions in the sentence:
- Front (before the subject):
ක්රියා විශේෂණ වාක්යක කතෘ ඉදිරියෙන් යෙදීම
- Now we will study adverbs.
- Middle (between the subject and the main verb):
ක්රියා විශේෂණ වාක්යක කතෘ හා ක්රියාව අතරට යෙදීම
- We often study adverbs.
- End (after the verb or object):
ක්රියා විශේෂණ වාක්යක ක්රියාව හා කර්මයට පසුව යෙදීම
- We study adverbs carefully.
The best way to tell if a word is an adverb is to try making a question, for which the answer is the word. If the question uses how, where or when, then the word is probably an adverb.
