1.
Make a (two-dimensional) scale drawing of the major sections (i.e., the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core) of the Earth, where 1" equals 2000 km.
  2. Using a time scale of 15 billion years = 365 days, let January 1st represent the beginning of the universe and December 31st correspond to the present day.  Determine which day of the calendar year each of the following events would occur on:
    1. Formation of the Earth  [4.6 billion years ago]
    2. Beginning of life on Earth  [3 billion years ago]
    3. First appearance of dinosaurs  [230 million years ago]
    4. Extinction of dinosaurs  [65 million years ago]

  3. Using the same time scale above (in exercise 2), determine the day and time of day (to the nearest minute) when humans/hominids first began to appear on Earth [6 million years ago].

  4. The annual (residential) property tax rate for Seattle, WA is $11.50 per $1000 of the real estate's assessed value.
    1. A house whose assessed valued is $145,000 will be levied with how much property tax?
    2. A home owner pays $2,300.00 in property tax annually. What is the assessed value of the house?

  5. Recently (Aug. 9, 2006), the exchange rate of Japanese yen (¥) to the U.S. dollar ($ or USD) was 115.01¥ per $1.00.
    1. How much would $20.00 represent in the Japanese currency of yen?
    2. A liter of gasoline in Tokyo, Japan typically costs about 140¥.  What is the approximate cost of 1 gallon of gasoline bought in Tokyo in USD?

  6. Suppose that you were recently hired to feed the animals at a local dog kennel.  Your supervisor instructs you to mix Purina Hi Pro dog food with Alpo dog food in a 5:2 ratio.
    1. If you use 12 lbs of Purina Hi Pro, how many pounds of Alpo must be mixed with it?
    2. If 28 lbs of feed total are required to feed all of the animals, how much of each food will be needed?

  7. Two-stroke (a.k.a. 2-cycle) engines must have a fuel mixture of gas and oil.  For a particular Craftsman model (20-in.) chainsaw, the manufacturer suggests a ratio of 32:1 (gas to oil).  A 2.5 gallon gas can is to be used in preparing a gas-oil mixture for the chainsaw.
    1. If you have 2¼ gallons of gasoline, how much oil in ounces will need to be mixed to obtain the manufacturer's suggested ratio?
    2. If you wish to obtain a final mixture of 2.5 gallons, how many gallons of gasoline and how many ounces of oil will have to be mixed in order to obtain the manufacturer's suggested ratio?

  8. A typical ratio mix for making concrete is 4:2:1 for parts of gravel, sand and cement, respectively.
    1. If you have 4.0 cubic feet of gravel, how many cubic feet of sand and how many cubic feet of cement will be needed?
    2. If you have 1.2 cubic feet of sand, how many cubic feet of gravel and how many cubic feet of cement are needed?
    3. If you want to mix 35 cubic feet of concrete, how many cubic feet of each ingredient gravel, sand and cement are required?

  9. The steepness of a house roof is characterized by its pitch.  The pitch of a roof is determined as the ratio of the Rise (change in vertical distance) to the Run (change in horizontal distance).
    House Profile: Problems #9-10
If the blueprints of a house plan designate it as having a 4/12 pitch and the span (see illustration above) of the house is 36 feet, then determine the vertical distance between the ridge of the roof and the ground.

  10. If the house illustrated above (see Exercise 9) were drawn on a set of blueprints with a scale of 4 ft = 1 inch, then find the scaled width (span) and height (to the roof ridge) of the house on the blueprints.
